The dumbing down of news

Explains a lot.

“In an age of 24-hour news, declining ratings and intense competition, the commodity in greatest demand is noise. Never mind the content, never mind the facts: all that now counts is impact. A loudmouthed buffoon, already the object of public outrage, is a far more bankable asset than someone who knows what they’re talking about. So the biggest platforms are populated by blusterers and braggarts. The media is the mirror in which we see ourselves. With every glance, our self-image subtly changes.”

Love in the time of robots

Love Death + Robots is awesome, NSFW, and definitely for mature audiences. My favorite episode is “Zima Blue” followed closely by “Good Hunting” — I’m torn between the two, actually.

And if you’re getting a Heavy Metal vibe from this anthology, well, that’s because Tim Miller and David Fincher were originally planning to collaborate on an omnibus Heavy Metal movie.

“The original idea behind the duo partnering on Heavy Metal came from an early meeting Miller and Fincher had about collaborating in the late ’00s. Miller had been developing a ‘different kind of Heavy Metal’ for a new generation with the sci-fi and fantasy comics magazine’s editor/publisher Kevin Eastman.

“Heavy Metal — with its blend of subversive, cyberpunk, and sometimes pornographic stories featuring monsters, machines, and beautiful women — had had a huge influence on Miller as a child, and had previously been adapted into two cult-favorite feature films (one in 1981 and one in 2000). This new approach to an omnibus film stemmed from Miller’s desire to ‘do animation that wasn’t Hanna-Barbera.’”

Love anime? Check out the world’s first anime prediction game

Crystal Ball is an anime prediction game from Singapore-based BlockPunk.net, the world’s first P2P anime studio that was founded by the former head of anime at Netflix and the producers of “Berserk”, “Devilman Crybaby”, and “The Animatrix”.

BlockPunk uses blockchain to allow fans to buy, collect, and sell digital collectibles. They can even suggest storylines and pitch their own anime.

Check out this e27 article for more about BlockPunk.

Thanks to fellow ex-Yahoo and now SeedPlus Managing Partner Michael F. Smith Jr. for the heads up. SeedPlus led the S$1.3 million (US$957,000) seed funding round of BlockPunk.

Let’s stop capitalism from destroying our planet

Greed is never good. Stop stealing our planet’s future and leaving it up to the next generation to deal with the consequences. Time is running out.

George Monbiot has an excellent opinion piece on how capitalism is destroying the Earth.

“At the heart of capitalism is a vast and scarcely examined assumption: you are entitled to as great a share of the world’s resources as your money can buy. You can purchase as much land, as much atmospheric space, as many minerals, as much meat and fish as you can afford, regardless of who might be deprived. If you can pay for them, you can own entire mountain ranges and fertile plains. You can burn as much fuel as you like. Every pound or dollar secures a certain right over the world’s natural wealth.”

Of decluttering and minimalism

Here’s a great blog post that explains the difference between decluttering and minimalism.

“The important thing isn’t how you do it, what you keep, or the number of things you ultimately wind up with. The important thing is allowing that shift in perspective—fighting against the cultural message that the things you own represent your success, that you must be busy in order to be productive, that who you are and what you have will never be enough—and recognizing that the most important things in life were never things.”

Sam’s Recognition Day

Reach for the stars. Congratulations Sam! Ellen Alarilla and I love you so much and we’re so proud of you.

Accompanied Sam on stage when she received her awards from Headmaster Jerome Castro.

After school, Sam and I continued Daddy Daughter Day by having tea.

We’ve been calling it Daddy Daughter Day since she was little, after watching “Daddy Day Care” for the first time.
