How do you feel about piracy and The Pirate Bay case?

Here’s an excerpt from my latest CNET Asia blog entry.

This case has gained a lot of media mileage, particularly due to the “the rock-star quality of The Pirate Bay trial” in its home country of Sweden, as noted in another Threat Level entry.

It will be interesting to see how this case unfolds, and what its implications will be for the current business models of the music and movie industry.

I don’t think it should be surprising if public opinion seems to be sympathetic toward the defendants in The Pirate Bay case. Without going into the merits of the case or the thorny issues behind piracy and intellectual property rights, I think it goes without saying that many consumers have at one time or another watched a bootleg movie or listened to pirated music. Because, yup, even watching TV shows illegally uploaded to YouTube would qualify as that, right?
